Square Feet to Bigha
A bigha has no single value — it runs from 6,804 sq ft in Uttarakhand to 27,225 in Rajasthan. Pick your state, then convert.
There is no universal answer to this one, and any converter that gives you a single number without asking where the land is has quietly picked a state on your behalf.
A bigha is a customary unit, not a standardised one. In West Bengal it is 14,400 sq ft. In Uttar Pradesh it is around 27,000. In Uttarakhand it is 6,804 — four times smaller than its neighbour. Convert a Bengal figure using a UP bigha and you understate the land by nearly half.
Pucca and kaccha bigha
Several northern states recognise two bighas at once. The pucca bigha is the full, official measure; the kaccha bigha is a local fraction of it, often a third or a half, used informally in villages and in older records. Rajasthan is the clearest case: 27,225 sq ft pucca against 17,424 kaccha, both in active use.
When a seller says “bigha” without qualifying it, they usually mean whichever version makes the plot sound larger. Ask which.
The number that actually governs
Whatever the local convention, the figure that binds a transaction is the one recorded by the revenue department — in the khasra, khatauni or jamabandi for your district. Those records are increasingly kept in hectares and square meters regardless of what the market still says in bigha.
Use the table below to translate, then verify against the record before any money moves.
Square feet to bigha table
This table is fixed to the Uttar Pradesh figure of 27,000 sq ft, whichever state is selected above. Use the converter for any other region — the spread between states is wide enough that the wrong one is a materially wrong answer, not a rounding difference.

One bigha by state
These are the figures used in local practice and in property listings, not statutory definitions. Where a sale or a mutation is involved, the number that governs is the one in the revenue record — check it before you rely on any of these.
