Square Feet to Acres

Divide by 43,560. A 10,000 sq ft lot is 0.2296 acres. A quarter-acre building plot — the standard American suburban lot for most of the twentieth century — is 10,890 sq ft.

Where 43,560 comes from

It looks arbitrary because it is inherited rather than designed. An acre was originally the area a man with one ox could plough in a day, and it settled into a rectangle one chain wide by one furlong long. A chain is 66 feet, a furlong is 660 feet, and 66 × 660 is 43,560. The number survives because American land records were built on it long before anyone proposed replacing it.

That shape is also why an acre is not a square. It is a long strip, which made sense when turning a plough team was the slow part of the job.

The figures worth memorizing

A half-acre is 21,780 sq ft, a quarter-acre 10,890, and a tenth 4,356. Zoning rules are frequently written against those thresholds, so a lot listed at 10,800 sq ft is not quite a quarter acre — and on a minimum-lot-size restriction, “not quite” is the whole question. If a plot is irregular rather than a clean rectangle, measure it in sections and total them before converting.
