What an acre actually looks like

An acre is hard to picture because it has no fixed shape, only a fixed area. Squared off, it is about 208.7 feet on each side — close enough that pacing 70 large steps in each direction from a corner gets you roughly an acre. An American football field, endzones included, is about 1.32 acres; without them it is very nearly nine-tenths of one, which is where the familiar “about an acre” comparison comes from.

That flexibility of shape is exactly why acreage alone tells you so little about whether a plot is usable. Five acres in a 200-foot-wide strip and five acres in a compact square are the same number and completely different pieces of land.

Checking the number you were given

Acreage on a listing is often carried forward from an old survey, and old surveys disagree with satellite measurements more often than you would hope. If the plot is a simple rectangle, measure the two sides, multiply, and compare against the acreage times 43,560. A discrepancy under a percent or two is normal. Anything larger is worth resolving before it becomes a boundary dispute rather than a rounding question.
