Square Inches to Square Feet

There are 144 square inches in a square foot, not 12. Convert small measured areas into square feet for pricing, tiling and materials.

1sq ft

Formula: square feet = square inches × 0.00694444

Divide by 144. A 12 × 12 inch tile is 144 sq in, which is exactly one square foot. A 6 × 6 inch sample is 36 sq in, or a quarter of one.

It is 144, and the reason people reach for 12 is the same trap every time

Twelve inches make a foot, so twelve feels like the right divisor. But a square foot is twelve inches in both directions, so it holds 12 × 12 = 144 square inches. Using 12 makes every area you convert twelve times too large — an error big enough that it usually announces itself, which is the one mercy of this particular mistake.

The same logic runs through every squared conversion on this site. Take the linear factor and square it.

Where square inches show up in practice

Tile is the main one. Nominal tile sizes are given in inches, so a box of 12 × 24 inch tiles is 288 sq in each, and dividing by 144 gives 2 sq ft per tile — which is what you need before you can work out how many boxes a floor takes.

It also appears in fabrication and sheet goods: countertop offcuts, acrylic, glass and sheet metal are frequently priced per square foot but measured and cut in inches. Convert before you compare quotes, or you will be comparing two numbers that are not the same kind of thing.
