Square Yards to Square Feet

One square yard is nine square feet, exactly. Convert a plot or carpet figure into square feet, with no factor to look up and nothing to round.

900sq ft

Formula: square feet = square yards × 9

Multiply by 9. A 200 sq yd plot is 1,800 sq ft. A 133 sq yd plot is 1,197 sq ft. Because a yard is exactly three feet, this conversion never produces a fraction you did not start with.

Plots are quoted in square yards more often than you would expect

In the UK, in much of India, and in older American deeds, land comes quoted by the square yard rather than the square foot. A “200 yard plot” in Delhi or Lahore means 200 square yards, not a 200-yard boundary — a genuinely common misreading that inflates the plot in a buyer’s head by a factor of nine.

The same unit travels under another name: a gaj is a square yard, so 200 gaj and 200 sq yd are the same plot described twice.

Sanity-checking a plot listing

Nine is small enough to run in your head, which makes it a useful check on a listing that quotes both units. If a plot is advertised as 250 sq yd and 2,000 sq ft, one of those figures is wrong — 250 sq yd is 2,250 sq ft. Listings pick up errors like this when a figure gets converted once, rounded, and then converted back by someone else. Do the multiplication yourself and the mismatch shows up in seconds.
