Square Feet to Gaj

One gaj is nine square feet — it is the square yard under an Indian name. Convert a built-up or plot area into the unit north Indian listings use.

100gaj

Formula: gaj = square feet × 0.11111111

Divide by 9. A 900 sq ft plot is 100 gaj. A 1,350 sq ft plot is 150 gaj.

Gaj is the square yard, not an approximation of it

This is worth stating plainly, because a lot of conversion tables treat gaj as though it were its own unit with a fussy decimal factor. It is not. A gaj is a square yard, so the conversion is exactly nine square feet, with nothing rounded and nothing regional about it. If a source gives you 8.9 or 9.1, it has introduced an error that was never there.

That also means gaj is one of the few Indian land units you can rely on across state lines. Bigha, katha, marla and ground all shift depending on where you are standing. Gaj does not.

Plot sizes you will see quoted

Residential plots across Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are commonly listed in gaj, in a fairly standard ladder: 50 gaj (450 sq ft), 100 gaj (900 sq ft), 200 gaj (1,800 sq ft), 500 gaj (4,500 sq ft).

One caution on listings that quote gaj and square feet together: check that the square footage refers to the same thing. Plot area and built-up area are different numbers, and a two-storey house on a 100 gaj plot has roughly 1,800 sq ft of built-up area on 900 sq ft of land.
